It's time: Ubuntu Mobile

I am beyond excited thanks to this tip from JKOnTheRun:

Ubuntu Mobile.

I am giddy at the thought. Really. Ubuntu. Mobile. Ooooh aaaah.
Here's what we know about it so far:
  • The web with all the bells and whistles including AJAX, with Java and Flash plugins installable. These are not included with the standard distro for licencing reasons, but are a fast and easy install.
  • Touch friendly
  • Optimized for small screens
  • Recommended system specs of 512MB memory and installable to 2GB flash drives perfect for even low-end MIDs.
  • Customizable appearance, applications, etc.
Expect full coverage and HOWTOs.

they say it has an (optional) flash user interface. doesnt this kind of betray the idea of a device based on open technology?

The other alternative is a blingtastic Clutter front-end, if the idea of Flash upsets you. There are multiple free flash implementations though.

see if you can get it to boot on the EEEpc using a SD card.

ok, so its touch focused, but one could hope that it also supports a bog standard mouse...

The ubuntu mobile interface is mostly a modfication of maemo, at least to me.

A few things I really don't understand especially when it comes to choosing the applications.
i.e. firefox over microb, or sylpheed over modest.

Anyway. I tried a few weeks ago to get UME to run on my PS3 without much success. The interface is not able to deal with any other resolution than 800x480. Also most components do not yet work as expected if they work at all.

Still, if you want to try getting UME to run on the eee there is a image builder in hardy, but afaik there is no template for the eee, yet.

several of the current requirements leave nokia in the cold.

256+mb ram
3d accelerator

I think the native hardware has support for 3d acceleration, but nokia is the only one with docs and it's probably under a NDA. Memory can probably be solved with a few maemo tricks and switching to lighter clients for some things like MicroB and Modest.

ThoughtFix, please give us video reviews of Ubuntu Mobile running on the devices listed under "Platform" on the wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded): Samsung Q1 Ultra, Fujitsu U1010, HTC Shift, Amtek U560, Elektrobit MIMD, or Kohjinsha SH6 (or the Kojinsha E8 coming out on 29Feb2008).

@Eric: Sorry, but no. Ubuntu Mobile is being developed for x86 processors and in case you didn't know, the Nokia iTs uses an ARM processor. So, no luck for us :-(

It seems that Nokia just made a deal with the devil and is looking to put one of Microsoft's "death star" own the internet monopoly style (proprietary) technologies onto their cell phones... AND interent tablets! Is this a warning for all Maemo folks to stay away... and maybe go instead to work for an effort around Ubuntu Mobile?

Microsoft, Nokia Put Silverlight On Mobile Devices

"Nokia will also make Silverlight available on its Series 40 devices and its Internet Tablet devices, the companies are expected to announce Tuesday".

I was going to buy an N810, but now, I am not!

Silverlight is a non-standard and it is only a tool for Microsoft's stategy "to OWN the web" via content (and this move by Mokia is WRONG). It is obvious that one of two things just happend. A) MS paid them a lot of money, or B) Nokia just lost their minds.

This move will adversely affect anything that is happening at Maemo. My suggestion to developers is to FORK and go to Ubuntu Mobile instead.
