On the road with the Eee

I was still in line when two people asked to see the Eee. Both were considering getting them for their children. They asked about the OLPC project and both had the two machines confused. This is likely because every media story on the Eee can't help but mention the OLPC as well.

I wanted to let them play more, but I am running xubuntu instead of Xandros so they would not have had the real experience of the Eee. I changed the operatin system so I can extend /usr and /home on to my 4GB SD card. I gave /usr 2GB and it's almost full already. It was also much easier to configure my N95 as a modem on xubuntu so I will be using this for a little bit.

Perhaps I am spoiled by the ease of mobility on the Nokia N800/N810 and their maemo distribution. They expect users to want to connect away from WiFi hotspots so include Bluetooth and a mobile carrier wizard to configure tethered Internet connections. More later.

Hello, it's great to see people getting into the Asus Eee PC, I am waiting for the 10" one to come out. My question is are you going to be posting a video about your Eee PC running Xubuntu? Thanks.

Yes, and some tips on how you set your xubuntu on the Eee for maximum performance for us linux newbies. :)

Are you getting an OLPC too...

One thing about the OLPC is that you get about $135 of extra value (or more) as there is some kind of mobile internet service included?

Do you know of this?
Would love to see you do a OLPC review too.

Just curious as to whether all hardware was automatically configured in xubuntu. Did you have to aquire drivers for power management or wifi.

OLPC "mobile internet service" probably refers to the 1-year T-Mobile freebie to those who do the Give One/Get One (G1G1) program that expires at the end of this year (few more days).
