Asus Eee Ease of Speed Test

I went ahead and did it. I bought the Asus Eee 701. In fact, I've already voided the warranty by opening the little flap to drop in a 1GB RAM module. In my first article here, I am testing if it truly is all about ease. In the video below, I go from "boxed" to "browsing" as fast as a normal person would. Let me tell you: Even with the default warnings, passwords, time settings, and EULA agreements, it's still going to be much faster than current Vista+Crapware laptops.

Here's the video:

My next steps are to investigate the Xandros Linux install, play with other OS's like Ubuntu, gOS, Windows, and OS X, and then start the REAL hacking. I intend to expand on my UMPC experience in internal mods by trying to get an internal Bluetooth module in this baby. I have to thank my fellow blogger Kevin Tofel (JKOnTheRun) for pointing me to tnkgrl and her blog posts about hardware hacking. Her information is fantastic and any Eee enthusiast should subscribe. I don't know if I have the solder skill to pull right from the on-board ports, but I we will see in the coming months. Stay tuned for more Eee hacking and use.

Wow. And I *just* asked for an N800 for my upcoming birthday! I didn't realize quite how small that thing is. I think the N800 will still be better for me when I ride the bus and walk around campus, but it would certainly be nice to have a real computer (yes, I know the N800/N810 is a "real computer"...but you all know what I mean)
But, since I already have a good laptop that I carry around all the time, the N800 will probably be a good secondary unit for me.

But wow...Asus really made a good product.

You might just have started a whole new genre of unboxing videos!!!

Well done Dan. Eee looks nice.

I had the opportunity to play with one at a local store in Vancouver and it is an awesome little machine. In fact, I plan to go back and pick one up in two weeks. One thing though: Apparently, despite it being labeled the "Eee PC", ASUS calls it the "E-PC" ... so no need to sound as though you've developed a stutter when describing the gadget to your friends.

this mini laptop is ridiculously silly and a poor approximation of the OLPC, which is reasonably well designed in comparison.

i can be very critical of nokia and iphone alike, but this asus design takes useless gadgetry to a whole new level.

... i'm seriously looking forward to android and some common sense.

What's with the HUMUNGOUS border around the visible area of the LCD? It looks like the usable area is only a third of the entire screen. Is that right?

Nice shirt Dan.

" they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire..."

Interesting video, Thoughtfix. Maybe you've discovered by now that you're mispronouncing "Eee." No need to stutter over "e-e-e"; you should pronounce it simply as a single "e".

By the way, the audio and video are out of sync. Not a big deal, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for the useful 'tube.

@luudite: the squirrels, I believe, are Merry, not Married. But LOL anyway.
