Super UMPC Hardware Hacks

Following my (surprisingly very popular) internal hub/readyboost hack, JKK (my inspiration) decided to take it to an extreme and install both a solid-state disk and HSDPA into his Amtek T770 UMPC!

The end result is simply beautiful. Including SSD greatly improves battery life and including HSDPA means internet everywhere. Check out his post for high-resolution pictures and a video.

Not one to be outdone, I decided to try to install a webcam in my umpc using one of the extra USB ports.

The hardware part was easy: Shave down a USB plug and shorten the USB cable on a webcam. Success!

Next step: Test the hardware so it still works. Success!
Third step - Look at the webcam again. It's way too thick. There's NO WAY to install that into a UMPC without it sticking way too far out. Fail. Epic fail. Oh well - time to find a slim webcam element! You win this round, JKK!

You should be able to take off that big plastic lens and have it still work just fine, I've seen a few USB webcams tested around the office like that.
