Windows Mobile Device Center overview

I have to hand it to Kevin Tofel of JKOnTheRun. He beat me to a story of a picture of Skype on the N800, he also took one story right off my to-do list: Using a Windows Mobile device as a modem to get to the Internet. He even did a Mac version of the same.

Anyhow, to wrap up what was going to be a two-part bit on Windows Mobile devices, I will post an introduction to Windows Mobile Device Center and what it does. It fully replaces what was ActiveSync on XP. There is a caveat on getting it working on the Motorola Q: You have to disable "Advanced Networking Functionality" in Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC. Once that's done, WMDC works fine. The video shows more.

As mentioned in the video, WMDC does NOT synchronize with Vista's included calendar or contact manager but will sync with Outlook. If you want to give Outlook a try, there's a free 60 day demo of Office 2007 which is what I am using in the video.

I did mention that I called MS Support on this. One thing I noticed was that they kept following up with me until I gave them the OK to close the ticket. That's a good sign for support.
