As a follow-up to my
very successful Windows Vista Ultimate fresh installation, I tried to do an in-place upgrade. My TabletKiosk eo v7110 got upgraded to a 100G hard drive some time ago and has been in near constant use on that drive since. All the factory apps, many third party apps, and a bunch of media were installed. I loaned my external hard drive to a dear friend so I am going to risk it all with a Vista upgrade. I'll be taking the in-place Tablet PC Edition 2005 and will be replacing it with Vista Ultimate.
- Started CD at 8:33 PM
- Searched for updates and had my license key in 5 minutes later. Entering it was much easier since I could actually READ the display.
- Finished checking compatibility at 8:53.
- LOTS of issues as potential problems:
- Seven hardware drivers including bluetooth HID units.
- PowerDVD 6
- Microsoft ActiveSync
- VZAccess Manager
- Windows Messenger 5.1
- I ignored them all and went ahead. Started at 8:56 PM.
- First reboot started at 9:31 PM.
- When it returned to "expanding files" it was back at the old ugly/unreadable resolution.
- Reached second reboot at 9:57
- Third reboot: 10:47 Instant Blue Screen of Death and reboot. Selected "Start Windows Normally" and got another BSOD/Reboot.
- Try again in Safe Mode With Networking. BSOD+Reboot.
- Try again with Safe Mode alone. BSOD+Reboot.
- Try again, selecting "Earlier Version of Windows" - Hard locked on the way up. Black screen.
- Try again, unplugging all USB devices and choosing Safe Mode. BSOD+Reboot.
- Plugged USB back in and selected "Windows Vista Rollback." at 10:55 PM
- Rebooted back to Windows XP Tablet PC Edition at 11:01
It's time for a new tactic.
- Uninstalled all the software marked as compatibility issues except Windows Messenger (already was unchecked in Windows Components but wasn't gone!) Uninstalled VMWare so the Virtual Ethernet Adapters were gone
- Uninstalled some other stuff (Daemon tools, toolbars, etc)
- Ran the latest Windows updates
- Installed the latest WLAN and graphics drivers as per my "fresh install" post.
- Started the install again.
- Long story short: Same results.
Third tactic:
- Installed Windows Easy Transfer on the Tablet PC Edition 2005 box
- Exported all documents and settings to a network location
- Installed Vista Ultimate from scratch
- Restored all documents and settings from the network location
So I was able to keep my documents and settings but was not able to keep my applications. I could go through driver-by-driver and application-by-application, but that's WAY more work than I can handle right now. I'm rapidly becoming a Vista addict and all these two-hour install sessions are cutting into it. Anyone who has been able to upgrade from Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 to Windows Vista Ultimate on a UMPC is invited to comment on this post and tell how they were able to do so!

I'm not really sure what to tell you as far as the "how", but I did an upgrade installation of Vista Ultimate on my eo v7110 right after Vista was released and it went pretty much without a hitch. The installation did take a couple hours and I had to go in and manually update/reinstall some of the drivers, but otherwise it worked fine.
I suspect you must have some non-standard software or drivers installed on your system that are conflicting with the update install. I can state with certainty that an upgrade install from XP Tablet to Vista Ultimate is definitely possible on a v7110.
I used my system with the upgrade install for about 2 months or so, but eventually did decide to do a reformat and clean install in order to get rid of some residual clutter.
