Today's Dedication: Don Herbert

There are many factors that go into the creation of a scientist or geek. One great source of my inspiration came in the form of Don Herbert, who passed away today at the age of 89.

Thank you, Mr. Wizard, for introducing me and many others to your wonderful world of science and analytical thought. Good journeys to you in the great beyond.

One time when I was a kid (around 10 years old, or so) my Dad took me to a trade show event where Don Herbert did a show to entertain the kids. I ended up getting picked to come up and assist him with one of his experiments, which involved burning a hole in a tongue-depresser using a magnifying glass. Somewhere, I still have that tongue-depresser, which Herbert audigraphed for me afterwards.

That is one of my more treasured childhood memory and I really was saddened to learn of his passing yesterday.
