iMadness - and I DO need a new MP3 player

What's the mad, mad irony of iPhone launch day?

My 1st generation iPod nano 4GB, purchased on the original release date in Sept. 2005, started crapping out today. Reboots. Probably my fault as I DO leave it in the car way too often and that's not a good idea.

Now it's time to look at other PMPs. I have a sweet car kit for iPods, but am hesitant to buy another one right now because 5th generation iPods were introduced in October of 2005 so they're due for a next revision. There was a minor revision in Sept. 2006 but that only changed the available sizes and brightened the screen.

I initially didn't like the Zune because I didn't like the interface, but as I am using Windows Media Center daily I may find a Zune handy if there is some way to sync my recorded TV every day automatically. This will also free my music library from my cramped 160G internal hard drive on my iMac Core2Duo 2.0.

I am also considering an LG Chocolate phone as Verizon states it will work as a USB EV-DO broadband modem, supports Bluetooth DUN, supports A2DP so it can send music to my sweet Bluetooth stereo headset, and is small and thin enough to fit comfortably in my gadget holster. My Motorola Q is becoming less useful since I no longer use it for GPS since I have something better to use, new updates limit it's functionality, and I'll have to drop another $110 on Outlook if I want to sync my contacts and calendar. I'll get to play with one soon thanks to my pumpkin-cookie-supplier, so I'll see how it performs. I would love to use Canola on my N800 as my primary PMP, but as beautiful as it is as a desk media player, it's not as good as a pocket player - especially without the lack of Bluetooth A2DP support.

Any suggestions on a new MP3 player, friends?

I would recommend getting the N95, the size of storage is only governed by the size of memory card.

This phone works excellently as a 3G modem (UMTS) on both Windows and Linux (don't have a Mac), the video functions are pretty good considering it's a phone.

The downsides to this phone and this is only because I haven't upgraded the firmware yet - the WiFi is a bit wobbly at times, and the GPS isn't great.

Otherwise a brilliant phone, which is very much geared for media (video/music/photo)

I WANT an N95, but it isn't and will never be CDMA/EV-DO, thus will not be available to me on my Verizon contract. I could bite the bullet and change providers, paying a cancellation fee, but that's a lot of money on top of the price of a new phone.

I'm sure you've already considered this, but have you reinstalled the firmware to the Nano? Might not be hardware/heat related, just corrupted firmware if all it is doing is rebooting.

I have been using my N800 to listen to on the bus to work, walking thru Charlotte, etc with a plain old pair of earbud headphones (not the ones provided with the N800 - no padding on 'em!), and I'm pretty satisfied! I loaded up my two 2Gb SD's with my favorites, and just choose random play on Canola. Good enough for me! (It doesn't have the sorting capabilities of an iPod i guess, but it's music on the go!) One really fun thing about the N800 as an mp3 player is, it's got the built in speakers. I've used it without the headphones while eating lunch outside, etc... can't do that with an iPod or a lot of the standalone mp3 players.

Check out Trekstore Vibez. Plays mp3, ogg, flac and more, one of the very few (only?) players to implement gapless playback (so that you can enjoy "Abbey Road" and "The Wall" again), decent storage capacity (12Gb).

Throw your eyeballs in the direction of a Zen Vision:M (or, if you want something smaller, the Stone Plus).

Happy Vision:M owner here. Plays most videos without any conversion! :D
