It's a huge blogging weekend for me, so stay tuned. First order of business: The Samsung Q1b loaned to me from VIA got dropped off at FedEx this morning. I shot the last footage I needed for two more videos (one coming later, one coming when my NDA on the software expires) and boxed it up last night.
What did I think about the Q1b?
- It is simply a joy to hold and look at. Sleek, shiny, light, and smooth. Mmmm.
- BATTERY LIFE BATTERY LIFE BATTERY LIFE! It's fantastic.
- A soft-touch screen is better for consumer UMPCs, especially with touch-optimized applications.
- The VIA C7M does admirably with both XP and Vista, but at least a gig of RAM should be standard.
- Samsung did parallel releases of the Q1 with Celeron, Pentium, and VIA chips. The Celeron was the base (1st release) model, the Pentium M was the performance machine, and the VIA was the cool and long-running machine. They released two levels of Intel based Q1Ultra machines - I hope we see a C7M version running at 1.2-1.5 GHz
- Don't let it near my brother when he's in town from Iraq. He'll never let go of it and threaten to steal it.
I really should have written a lot more given the time I had it and I feel bad that I didn't. My highlight article was going to be the Q1b in a car install, but the mounting kit was taking too long to release and I had to eventually send it back. That makes me sad.
Keep track of the progress of VIA based UMPCs at UltraMobileLife.
