Interviewing Other Bloggers

When is the last time we did a who's whom on the UMPC blog roll? There are a lot of people here - all with specialties and focus.
  • What's your name and site?
  • How long have you been doing this?
  • What inspired you to get into tablet/ultra-mobile blogging?
  • What is your specialty?
  • Through all of it, what message do you want to convey to your readers?
I suppose it's fair for me to ask myself these questions too:

I'm Dan, but my Internet presence is ThoughtFix (Soon to become ThoughtFix, LLC. once the papers are complete.) I operate TabletBlog.com (formerly thoughtfix.blogspot.com) since December of 2005 and UltraMobileGeek.com since July of 2006. TabletBlog is focused on the Linux based Nokia Internet Tablets and UltraMobileGeek.com is focused on Windows UMPCs. I don't know where I'll put my writing on MIDLinux UMPCs yet.

I was inspired to do this because I've been a long-time supporter of small slate computing, dating all the way back to the original Pilot/PalmPilot organizers. Select content for go-everywhere computing is an essential part of my life.

I think my specialty is feature blogging. If you pick up a newspaper, you will find three general kinds of articles: News, Editorials, and Features. News tells you all the latest and greatest and there are plenty of UMPC sites that cover this well. Editorials express opinion and (hopefully) research-based speculation on the current state of affairs. Features take a specific topic that may not be new then explore it in depth. I do a little news, a little more editorial, and try like hell to focus on Feature writing.

I have two goals: The first is to evangelize slate tablet computing - preferably as small as possible. By "evangelize" I mean I wish to show other users or potential users just how much they can do with these devices NOW, then give them a taste for the future too. This, I hope, will speed up mass consumer adoption of these devices and help in my second goal: on-demand access to all applications, content, and communication in a single device. I outlined this dream on my personal blog.

Other UMPC bloggers: Why do you do it? Are you a gadget freak? In it for the money? Want to be the first on your block with everything? Consider the UMPC to be a religious experience? Share! Either contact my private Email or simply leave a comment here.

I'm Mark and I have the privledge of posting at Ultranauts.com.

In my real life I'm now the CFO of a small division of a public company. I spend a lot of time in the ERP space with my big site at DynamicAccounting.net. That site gets most of my blogging attention.

But I've been a tablet pc fan for a while. When I won a Q1 as part of the Origami launch, I went from fan to rabid UMPC nutjob.

The folks at Ultranauts gave me an opportunity to blog about UMPC's without the overhead of my own site and for that I'm grateful.

I'm still looking for a specialty. I probably do more enterprise stuff than most UMPC bloggers because that's where mine gets used. I also try to have some fun. There are better bloggers when it comes to features, cutting edge hardware and how to. I don't have the time or energy to play in the latest and greatest space. But, I am committed to making you laugh.

Also, you'll get more depth than width from me. I spend a lot of time with one unit. So I know the Q1 really well and I write about how to get the most out of it. Sometimes that translates to other units, sometimes it doesn't.

It's simply hard to not talk about a unit I spend so much time with and seem to use in ways that are a-typical. My wife is sick of hearing about it and my kids roll their eyes, so now I blog.

Good questions Dan! My blogging is done at jkOnTheRun.com, where we focus on mobile technology. I also write the occasional print magazine article, most recently, one on HDTV and PCs in PC Magazine. I started a personal blog back in 2004 and was the Lead Blogger for HDBeat at AOL back in 2005. HDBeat became EngadgetHD and around that time, I joined up with James at jkOTR. Every once in a while, I'll 'guest blog' like I did for Engadget at the 2006 CES.

Blogging about UMPCs was a natural progression since the devices are a perfect fit to the mobile technology theme I'm passionate about. I wouldn't say my specialty is a topic, but rather an approach. I try to show people the good and bad of a device, so they can make informed purchasing decisions. Additionally, if I can show them how to use the device in new ways or how to get more from the device, I'm ecstatic.

That's probably the message I try to send most: 'I enjoy this market and these devices; here's how you can too.'

I'm Warner Crocker and I'm part of the team at GottaBeMobile.com and also run my own blog, Life On The Wicked Stage. I'm not only a passionate mobile tech geek, but a theatre geek as well. That's my real job, producing, directing, and writing for the theatre.

I started writing about Tablet PCs and my passion for them on Tablet PC Buzz and somehow somebody paid attention. Still haven't figured that part out yet. That led to me becoming a Microsoft MVP for Tablet PCs. Still haven't figured that one out either.

I don't come at this from a tech perspective as much as a real world scenario in my real world which is the theatre. My first interest in Tablet PCs was as a new method taking and distributing notes, and that is still my main focus, although I branch out a bit to cover aspects of how this market segment is evolving.

I'm fortunate to play in both worlds and like to think my perspective might lend a pointer or two to someone out there.

I wasn't that excited about UMPCs at launch, but now that I've gotten my hands on a couple of them and put them to the test, I see the potential that the platform offers.

Frank Emailed me his answers:

* What's your name and site?

Frank J. Garcia- www.UltramobilePC-Tips.com And www.todoumpc.com

* How long have you been doing this?

I have been posting about Mobile Technologies specifically Pocket PCs and Smartphones since 2003, but in Spanish which is my first language. Back in March 2006 I decided to start my own blog posting in English – or what I call my broken English- about this new and amazing market that are the UMPCs. Around November 2006 I started to work as consulter and freelancer for www.todoumpc.com . I have been posting also as freelancer but at a lower scale at www.ultranauts.com

* What inspired you to get into tablet/ultra-mobile blogging?

My main PC at home is a Notebook and I have been using notebooks as my main or primary PC since 1996. In 2002 I felt in love with a Palm PDA but soon I discovered that it was not powerful enough for my needs and I bought my first Windows CE device. Since then I have been dreaming with something small but powerful enough to let me use the same programs that I was using normally in my notebook. And last year my dreams became a reality. Blogging is for me a necessity. My blog helps me or work for me as a sort kind of Information Bank. Some people use OneNote others use others tools, I use my blog. That’s my online database, the one I use to keep all the information that I consider important.

* What is your specialty?

I’m a Civil Engineer. But I have been working full time as Clipper, Visual FoxPro and Visual Basic Programmer since 1996. I’m currently the Information Technology Manager of the Company I work for.

* Through all of it, what message do you want to convey to your readers?

My main message to my readers is to Never give up. There is not a perfect software or a perfect hardware. What makes them perfect is our capability to find solutions and workarounds for those bugs and hardware failures that any of us working with PCs find daily.

My name is jkk.
Site is http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/

I started it on summer 2006.

First started with just a need to put my findings somewhere ( i was mainly writing to origamiproject forum ) and then to spread the word, help others and show nice stuff.

My specialty is videos and pix.
The fact is that i dont like to write ( read: cant write as good as others; lazy; videos are faster/easyer to make, for me )

Another thing is my ability to get devices as i work in mobile computing company.

My message is: buy mobile computer now! Don't wait for better and better, buy, play and learn the freedom with gear that can be used anywhere.

I'm Jeff and I post to http://umpc.bigbeaks.com. I started that particular blog about a year ago and also have a general-purpose blog (http://blog.bigbeaks.com) that I initiated about a year before that.

In addition to (and prior to) the blogs, I've been a frequent poster on quite a few online communities going all the way back to local Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's) in the 80s and then GEnie (GE's now defunct online service), CompuServe and various Usenet boards. In the past, a lot of my online participation was more in entertainment-oriented sites (movies, TV, and Disney fandom) than technology ones, though.

I have a strong technical background, having been an active user and programmer of computers since I was 10-years-old (starting out on a Radio Shack TRS-80). I have a degree in Computer Engineering plus 16 years of industry experience, primarily in online and game development. I currently work as an engineer in the web division of a major media company.

I have been very interested in mobile computing, particularly Palm PDAs, for quite a while and have done my share of posting to various relevant online communities. As a very early adopter to UMPCs (I bought one of the very first eo v7110s shipped), there wasn't much out there in the way of established communities and I felt that I could use a venue of my own for sharing my experiences.

I would say that my specialty is primarily long-form features and editorials focusing on my experiences with my UMPC and my viewpoints on issues relating to the industry as a whole. My posts are admittedly rather infrequent, but a lot of that is because I tend to spend a long time crafting them. They typically are pretty long and, I like to think, have a fair amount of meat to them.

I would say that the main message that I try to convey to my readers is that UMPCs are extremely useful today and are only going to become more so as the technology improves and the use cases expand.

* What's your name and site?

Hi! My name is Alex Zielenski and my site is umpcsearch.blogspot.com

* How long have you been doing this?

I have been blogging at that site since January of this year.

* What inspired you to get into tablet/ultra-mobile blogging?

I had been using a tablet pc for over two years and decided I wanted a smaller, lighter form factor so I decided to blog about my search for a UMPC to buy.

* What is your specialty?

I am an executive at a small medical device company heading up our manufacturing operations.

* Through all of it, what message do you want to convey to your readers?

My intent is to help others understand what a UMPC is and is not and what that means to them as a user. Also, to help my readers get the most out of their UMPC.

Chippy said...

I had forgotten about this thread. Sorry Dan.

* What's your name and site?
Steve Paine, aka Chippy (nothing to do with electronics, its a school nickname that came up because I looked like someone that left the previous year you was called 'chippy'! My main site is UMPCPortal.com (previously Origamiportal.com) but I have some other web-based projects going on.

* How long have you been doing this?
I started Carrypad (which has now folded into UMPCportal.com) in Feb 2006.
* What inspired you to get into tablet/ultra-mobile blogging?
I was up for a new phone contract and wanted to optimise my computing devices. I went through all my options and decided on a three-device strategy of 24/7 feature phone, Carrypad and Desktop PC. Unfortunately the Carrypad didnt exist so I started research and writing my findings in the blog.
* What is your specialty?
Folding my neck skin around my finger.
* Through all of it, what message do you want to convey to your readers?
The message is... oh sorry. You mean whats my job speciality? Er. 5-7" x86-based UMPCs I guess. Before UMPCs I was an internet security specialist and IP networks designer. I 'do' UMPCs full-time now.

The message I want to convey to the readers is two-fold. 1) honest informed and reliable opinion about the latest UMPCs news. 2) Give the user the tools and data to help them choose and buy a UMPC.
