2nd Generation UMPC: Still undecided.

There are four front-runners for my next UMPC purchase. All of them are 2nd generation Vista capable machines.

Samsung Q1 Ultra
Pro:
  • High Resolution Display (1024x600) - No other device has this.
  • Split QWERTY thumbboard good for couch and on-the-run use
  • LED backlighting
  • Gorgeous styling
Con
  • Thumb board not good for extend text entry
  • Appears to be the largest of my choices
  • No docking station
HTC Shift
Pro:
  • Convertible keyboard good for extended text entry
  • Very attractive styling
  • Lots of trust in HTC Brand
Con:
  • Keyboard not good for rapid text entry (requires a table, it seems.
  • Have to wait until end of summer at least
  • HTC's first entry into PC market
Gigabyte U60/Medion MD RIM 1000
Pro:
  • Sliding keyboard looks to be a balance of thumb use and finger use
  • 80G hard drive
  • Docking station
Con:
  • C7M only clocked at 1GHz
  • 768M base RAM
OQO model 02
Pro:
  • Smallest option
  • Sliding keyboard in familiar configuration
  • Docking station standard
Con:
  • Expensive
  • Digitizer (not touch) screen

This is a hard, hard decision especially since all my future UMPC writing and reviews will be tested on the next-gen device. I wish TabletKiosk would announce some entry into the 2nd gen UMPC market, preferably with a 1.5 GHz VIA C7M, high resolution soft touch screen, and support for up to 2GB RAM.

My vote goes for the Q1 Ultra XP. OQO is a lovely design but only an advantage if you plan to pocket your UMPC.
Medion/Gigabyte keyboard is..mmmm...not so good.
HTC Shift won't be available until later in the year. You can sell Q1 U at that point abd buy it! (Could be expensive too.

Q1U-V is an option but for $50 more you get less battery life (or will have to spend more time optimising it.)

Q1u because it will get the most out of Vista with its Intel cpu/gpu but I would have to say the thumbkeys do not look very ergo friendly, could have at least arched them to allow thumbs easy pivot to type.

OQO 02 is totally awsome, wish physical screen size was 1024 x 768, it needs a friggin pen silo, and yes I wish it had a touch screen but keep its active digitizer screen for its special features. Must stay pocket size.

The Ultra does have a docking station. In fact, it propably has the best arsenal of accessories of all UMPC's there are.

What about the tablet kiosk tuftab v7112XT--it is their 2n d generation. It is soft touch and has a 1.2 via processor (not 1.5). pcmcia slot and best stylus around.
