The Ultra-Mobile Challenge

Origami is now a year old. The Nokia Internet Tablets are pushing two years since announcement and are in their second generation. PDAs are dead, replaced by generations of Smartphones. How far can these devices be pushed?

I have a challenge. I invite any manufacturer, retailer, or hardware designer to attempt to replace my computers for two weeks. See if a power-user can survive without a full system for each purpose. (Yes, I'll give the evaluation unit back.) More details in the video here:

Here's the only requirement I put on the challengers:
  1. Small enough for me to want to carry everywhere. (say, under 3.5 pounds)
  2. Must have Bluetooth and WiFi.
  3. It must allow me to do all of my normal stuff.
So what do you think? Contact me at thoughtfix {at} gmail {dot} com and let me know if you have a contender you want to ship out for two weeks. I hope to hear from:
  • TabletKiosk (i7210 with a dock may do it.)
  • Samsung (Q1P is looking close too)
  • Sony (That UX Micro PC could work if it's docked)
  • OQO (How strong is the 02 anyway?)
  • Asus (I'm looking at that R2H-BH040C)
  • Medion (A sliding keyboard Origami device? Sweet!)
Friends of ThoughtFix: Pass this around a bit and encourage comments. Is it too soon for this challenge? Is this possible? Who would you bet on for a winner?

Good luck TF - good idea to try it out

Given your Linux preferences, I'm surprised that you are using Windows Media Center and not an Archos solution for your video.

I doubt that there is one device to meet all your needs - but you might find a small set of devices that still fall within the 3.5lb limit.

Haha. Nice scene with you on the toilet. If you have a UMPC and say you haven't taken it with you while taking a dump, you're lying. Also, there's no shame to admit your bedroom computer is for porn.. well, maybe.
As for your challenge, I don't think you should be able to access any of your files from your other computers. Including recorded TV shows from MCE. If you access the videos from like Orb, then maybe... but you're still using your desktop to record the video in the first place.
Anyway, goodluck.

I agree with Rod. Solely using mobile device should exclude any use of your MCE machine or the Viao.

Very interesting idea though. You definately need to give us the details once you finish your two weeks.

I just got a data plan on my mobile. I pretty much do not need my computer anymore since I do so much with my mobile phone. The neatest thing is that I can even watch naughty movies:) It is pretty neat, it's called Mobile TV. All I do is point my phone to sexoncell.com and they have adult mobile movies in different formats like 3gp movies, symbian, pda or whatever. If you have any other cool sites, please let me know! This one, though, even has a free daily mobile movie.
