Where the heck is Windows Automotive already? I tried to Email their North American press contact on Oct. 10 (Nate.Murphy@edelman.com) but the message bounced. I sent that notification to inthecar@microsoft.com but never got a response.
Let's look at the facts:
- The press release for in-car infotainment partnerships with Honda, Alpine, and others was released ten months ago.
- The market for in-car entertainment based on digital media (video, music, DVD, CD) is long established.
- The underlying technology has been on the market for some time.
- Other people are selling other, sometimes very expensive in-car computers. Examples:
- MP3Car's Infill T3 with StreetDeck
- Mini-Box's VoomPC
- Xenarc CP-ID8
- Windows Mobile GPS software like Microsoft's own Pocket Streets and TomTom's Navigator 6 are already both well established and popular.
Let me tell you what I want:
- Double DIN sized 6.5" 800x480 widescreen touchscreen.
- Enough horsepower to run GPS and music at the same time
- An optical drive for playing CDs and DVDs, accessible like this product.
- Bluetooth
- SD card slot
- Options like
- ODBII port interface with software that makes it work like a ScanGauge II
- Bluetooth GPS receiver or hard-wired GPS
- WiFi for remote library synchronization
- Removable hard drive or USB host port.

Here's why there's no Windows Auto... If MS Windows is connected to the drive train in any way, within 12 months someone will be dead and some attorney will be planning the end of Microsoft. Regardless of fault, enough potential jury members hate Redmond and Bill Gates that they will give the attorney minimum $50 billion dollars (Bill Gates approximate Net Worth) and MS will simply cease.
Windows is just not robust enough to ever handle a life or death situation.
But it is VERY rare that a CarPC is EVER tied to the drivetrain. It is usually completly segragated from everything but a power source, and the ACC line. In some occasions, the most extreme CarPC users will throw a ODB-II reader on to read diagnostics on the fly, Nothing that could effect the integrity of the safety or driving systems. The only way a CarPC can lead to a crash, is if the user is an idiot and does not pay attention to the road. WE WANT WINDOWS AUTO! XP's Hibernation is giving me the blues b/c of startup times.
Connecting the CarPC to the on-board diagnostics will be enough for an attorney to infer cause.
Well someone is already dying of a car reck regardless, I am mean we use GPS systems like tomtom on our PDA's or Microsoft Street and trips on our laptops and so on so forth, if this is the case then lets start sueing. I dont think that a solid excuse, i mean it exist for god sake someone will sue Mcdonalds coz the coffee was to hot, i mean there are people out there who have no life and gotta watch out from them but that doesnt mean we can improve on our systems.
Just a thought though there might be other issues that I might be missing
