Windows Vista on UMPCs

I managed to .. um .. arrange to test Windows Vista Home Ultimate Premium Beta (forgive the typo earlier) on my TabletKiosk eo v7110. After a bunch of waiting and work, I got it to boot. Here's a video:

However, there was a share of problems.
  • It defaults to 800x600 with no antialiasing. The text is near unreadable until you fix the resolution. The wrong resolution sticks the screen in a flicker until reboot.
  • The XP graphics driver works fine.
  • I couldn't get the touchscreen to work at all, even after installing the driver.
  • All the wireless LAN driver installs "errored out" saying they must be run on Windows XP or Windows 2000. I even tried installing them in "XP SP2 compatibility mode" and still failed.
Those were deal-breakers to proceed with the beta. I am running my restore CD on my tablet as we speak. Some notes about the experience:
  • Vista is pretty. Very pretty.
  • There is a lot more control panel functionality, but if you're used to the "old way" you have to dig around more to find your settings. They finally put the device manager right in the normal control panel window, where it should've been all along.
  • Window behavior is surprisingly responsive.
I hope they make a downloadable TouchPack for XP TabletPC owners when Vista comes to a full release. It'd be nice to have the latest OS with the latest functionality.

Are you planning to test RC1?
According to Some sources it includes more drivers.

I'll give it a shot. It's been downloading for the past few hours.
